DREAMING THE TRIBES OF VIRGINIA

DAWN’S DESCENDING,
ENDING INSIGHT
AND DARKEST NIGHT
ILLUMINATING THE ONCE-SEEN
NOW-UNSEEN-HOW?
TRIBE SCRIBE
SPITS MOON-LIT WORDS
AS WHITETAIL HERDS
SCATTER ACROSS THIS FIELD OF WHITE …
HOOF MARKS TRACING
ALIEN FACES
REPLACES
INDIGENOUS HOMELANDS WHERE
PATHS SORROWS TAKE A TURN TOWARD
THE INWARD
FINDING NO NOTICE OF
NEITHER NANSEMOND NOR MATTAPONI…
NO HOMILY FOR CHICKAHOMINY, SCATTERED …
NO MODICUM OF KINDNESS FOR
THE MONACAN,
YET THE WORDS RIDE- WIDE THIS PIXEL-PANORAMA
SEEKING THE PAMUNKEY AS I
PADDLE THE RIVERS AND ESTUARIES…
FINDING NO RAPPAHANNOCK
I FEEL PANIC, PERHAPS
KNOWING MY FAMILY AND OTHERS
ALSO LIVED HERE AFTER
PUSHING FIRST-PEOPLES PAST THEIR
POINT OF NO RETURN I FIND
MYSELF YEARN
FOR PEACE UPON THE LAND,
TAKE A SMALL STAND…
ASKING FORGIVENESS FOR SUCH
INDIGENOUS INDIGNITIES.
MAY THIS
HEART FELT SINCERITY,
THIS APOLOGY–
AND REQUEST FOR FORGIVENESS…
BE A SMALL LINE OF SMOKE TO CREATOR
TO MAKE RIGHT
THAT WHICH I HAVE BEEN SHOWN,
HERE IN THE DARKEST NIGHT.
